Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Let’s look at some motorcycle accident statistics.  Based on the number of miles driven, it’s estimated that a motorcyclist is approximately 25 times more likely to be killed in an accident than the driver or passenger of a car or truck. Many motorcyclists ride their bikes every day, and some choose to just ride their motorcycles on the weekends. Regardless of how often they’re used or not, the roads of Texas are dangerous for motorcyclists. It’s important to wear adequate protective clothing and always pay close attention to vehicles around you, when you’re riding a bike.

Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Texas

In 2016, it’s estimated that around 6,000 motorcyclists were seriously injured in crashes on Texan roads.

The Governors Highway Safety Association’s Motorcyclist Traffic Fatalities by State report tells us that, throughout 2016, there was a total of 5,251 motorcyclists who lost their lives in the United States. Of these 5,251 fatalities, 495 were in accidents in Texas. This makes the state with the third highest number of motorcyclist fatalities.

There are a couple of reasons why Texas has such a high number of motorcycle fatalities. First of all Texas is the second most populous state, and has the largest amount of roads by far. In Texas, there’s around 700,000 miles of roads, which dwarfs the amount of roads in California, which is second place with around 400,000 miles of roads.

The Texan weather also contributes to the high number of fatalities. As the weather is generally pleasant all year round, motorcyclists are free to ride their bikes all year round, instead of being restricted to the warmer months with better weather.

The Causes of Serious Motorcycle Crashes

It’s estimated that around a third of motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers not noticing the bike. The most common causes of motorcycle accident include:

  • Another vehicle impedes on the motorcyclist’s right of way.
  • Distracted driving.
  • Reckless driving or speeding by the motorcyclist or another motorist.
  • Road defects, such as bumps or potholes.
  • Mechanical defects – such as faulty brakes or bald tires.
