Many people feel a profound sense of joy when spending time with “man’s best friend.” Dogs love us unconditionally, and they often lift our spirits when we are feeling down.

Many of us don’t think about the injuries that can result from a dog bite. Although a dog may be “play biting,” the consequences can still be dire.

If you have suffered injuries from a dog bite, you need a San Antonio dog bite lawyer. You need the attorneys at Cesar Ornelas Injury Law.

Common Dog Bite Infections & Symptoms

If a dog bite goes untreated, the following infections could occur:

Streptococcus: these infections occur when a bacterium enters your body; a wide range of illnesses can present, and symptoms can range from mild to severe.

Symptoms of more severe cases may include:

  • Bacteremia: bloodstream infections;
  • Rheumatic fever: inflamed tissues in your joints and heart;
  • Toxic Shock Syndrome: a life-threatening condition that results from multi-organ infections; symptoms may include an elevated fever, confusion, muscle aches, nausea, and vomiting.

Staphylococcus aureus: a germ that is often found on people’s skin and noses; it can cause many different infections.

Symptoms may include the following:

  • Boils: painful, red lumps at the location of the bite;
  • Cellulitis: an infection of the deeper layers of the skin; oozing from the infection site may occur; and
  • Endocarditis: a bloodstream infection that causes the inner lining of the heart’s chambers and valves to become inflamed

Capnocytophaga: a type of bacteria that can spread through dog bites or close contact with the animal.

Symptoms may include:

  • Blisters;
  • Redness;
  • Swelling;
  • Drainage; and
  • Tenderness at the wound site.

In more advanced cases, a patient may experience gangrene. Gangrene prevents blood flow to limbs, causing body tissue to die

In cases where toes, fingers, or any other limbs have been without blood flow for a significant period of time, the only option for survival may be amputation.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Any dog bite can become infected. When a dog bites you, it leaves an open wound that allows bacteria, germs, and other infections to enter your bloodstream.

Many doctors recommend that you schedule a medical visit within 24 hours of being bitten. However, you may be able to care for your wound at home if the puncture is not deep.

You should see a doctor when experiencing any of the following:

  • If your bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes of applying pressure;
  • If the bite has broken the skin;
  • If you were bitten by a stray or wild dog;
  • If you have a weakened immune system; and
  • If you notice any signs of infection.

Although rare, a dog bite can result in tetanus. Tetanus can occur if the dog bite is contaminated with soil. This condition can quickly become life-threatening.

Symptoms of tetanus include any of the following:

  • Jaw cramping;
  • Muscle stiffness;
  • Muscle spasms (usually in the stomach);
  • Headache; and
  • Difficulty swallowing.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately.
