How Daylight Savings Time Affects Driving

As daylight savings time comes to an end, and winter brings fewer hours of daylight, drivers will be spending more time driving in the dark. The extra hour of sleep is accompanied by an increase in time spent driving in low light conditions, which is why the possibility of crashes goes up. The National Safety Council has found that traffic totalities are three times higher after dark, which means that is extremely important to take precautions.

Part of the danger can be attributed to the body’s response to darkness as we are naturally more alert when it is light outside and more tired when it is dark. One of the biggest challenges of driving in the dark is facing the glares from oncoming traffic. Our eyes take a moment to adjust to beams of light and can cause drivers to swerve, react, or even brake as a response. Additionally, depth perception, color recognition, and peripheral vision can each be compromised in the dark.

To prepare for driving in the dark:

  • Make sure your headlights are clean and aimed properly
  • Do not make direct eye contact with oncoming lights
  • Dim your dashboard in your car settings or manually
  • If you wear glasses, make sure they are clean and anti-reflective
  • Decrease driving speed when visibility is limited

Being careful on the road is essential year-round, so make sure to utilize these tips as you adjust to driving in darker conditions.
