We know lives are being impacted greatly by the COVID-19 virus and that includes the way Texans deal with our vehicle licenses, registrations, and other vital vehicular Texas requirements. In this article, you will find information that informs you on the TxDMV changes to current waivers and delays that have been temporarily activated as of March 2020. Please refer to your local DMV for more information and updates.

Texas Temporary Waiver Involvement

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV), in conjunction with our Texas Governor Greg Abbott, has temporarily waived certain requirements for driver’s license renewals, vehicle registrations, vehicle titling, and disabled parking placards. TxDMV has informed law enforcement agencies and the offices of the county tax assessor-collectors of the temporary waiver.

After declaring a state of disaster for all counties in Texas due to the threat of COVID-19. Governor Abbott issued a statement on March 16, 2020, granting a temporary extension to obtain the following:

  • Renewal of driver’s license
  • Initial auto registrations
  • Renewals of registrations
  • Vehicle titling
  • Renewals of a permanent disabled parking placards
  • Individuals with expired 30-day temporary permits to obtain another permit or Texas registration.

Effective Time Period

The temporary waiver applies to vehicle owners in all Texas counties. The waiver is in effect until 60 days after TxDMV notifies the public that normal vehicle registration, vehicle titling and related services have resumed. The 60-day period will be the same for all Texas counties.

Waiver’s Purpose

The waiver’s purpose is to prevent customers from having to physically visit a county tax assessor-collector office to obtain renewed driver’s license, to obtain initial registrations, to obtain 30-day temporary permits, to transfer titles, or to renew registrations or permanent disabled parking placards.

Current Online Access

Online access: Customers may continue to renew their registrations online at www.TxDMV.gov. Currently, TXDMV continues to provide online registration sticker requests and process all other online services.
