Passenger dies after high-speed crash at east El Paso intersection
EL PASO, TX — One person died early last Saturday after a car struck a light pole in east El Paso’s Montwood neighborhood, reports KVIA.
The fatal wreck occurred at the intersection of Montwood Drive and North Zaragoza Road, near a large shopping center, shortly after 12:30 a.m.
El Paso Police said a 23-year-old man was driving a Nissan Altima northbound on Zaragoza Road at a high rate of speed. As he neared the curved intersection, he failed to negotiate the turn and hit the light pole. Shortly after, the vehicle caught fire.
El Paso Fire crews extricated the driver and his male passenger from the car. Both patients were then rushed to a local hospital, where the passenger later died from his injuries.
An investigation by the EPPD’s Special Traffic Investigators (STI) remains ongoing. At this time, speed is believed to have factored into the crash.
