Latest Pedestrian Deaths Add to an Already Deadly Year on San Antonio Roads

Two pedestrians were hit and killed by vehicles this past weekend, adding to what is turning into the deadliest year for San Antonio pedestrians in the last 20 years.

After the weekend’s fatal incidents, there have now been 37 pedestrian deaths since the beginning of 2021. Last year’s number of pedestrian deaths, 61, was the highest death total recorded by the San Antonio Police Department for decades. However, if this year’s trend continues, 2021 could exceed last year’s total.

So far in June, there have been five pedestrian deaths. Before the previous weekend, police responded to fatal pedestrian crashes on June 10, 11, and 15th.

A 41-year-old man was walking southbound across the 1300 block of Bandera at around 9:30 p.m. on Friday when a Ford expedition struck him after the man failed to yield to traffic, police said.

Police reported that the driver fled the accident scene, leaving the man lying on the pavement, where he was hit a second time by a vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle stopped and called the police. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

If found, the first driver will likely be charged with failure to stop and render aid, the police said.

Bandera is one of the deadliest roads in San Antonio, with seven pedestrian deaths since January 2020.

From 2011 to June of 2021:

  • A 2.2 mile-stretch of Culebra between General McMullen and Interstate 10 has been the location of 17 deaths of pedestrians and cyclists
  • Austin Highway between Walzem and North Vandiver (2.6 miles) had 14 deaths
  • Enrique Barrera Parkway between South San Joaquin and South Acme (1.8 miles) had 11 deaths, the Express news reported.

Just 24 hours after Friday’s incident on Bandera, a second man was hit and killed by a car as he attempted to cross NW Loop 410 near Fredericksburg Road around 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
