A San Antonio woman in connection with a car crash that killed the parents of four on a Helotes road in January has been arrested.
The suspect, Elena Mar Carranza, 20, was charged Monday with two counts of intoxicated manslaughter, one count of intoxicated assault and three counts of aggravated assault. Carranza is accused of causing the January crash, ultimately killing 54-year-old Craig Smith, and 39-year-old Susan Smith and injured their four children.
An affidavit reports that Carranza was driving northbound on the highway in her Toyota Tundra at 6 p.m. when she directly hit the Smith’s Kia Sedona as they attempted to cross the highway. Carranza was driving 34 miles over the speed limit, traveling at 75 mph in a 45-mph zone. She did not apply her breaks until the impact, the affidavit said.
Craig and Susan Smith were in the front seat of the vehicle and were pronounced dead at the scene. Their children, ages 6-16, suffered serious injuries. Of the four children, one of them suffered a traumatic brain injury and a lacerated kidney.
The driver, Carranza, was taken to the hospital and was intubated, according to the affidavit.
Additionally, the affidavit stated that Carranza’s BAC was above the legal limit. Through her discussion with the authorities, it has been learned that she had consumed three mimosas previously at lunch. Upon further investigation, authorities learned that Carranza’s bank account shows that she was charged for two mimosas and a 24-ounce container of alcohol at Mad Dogs British Pub before cashing out at 4:36 p.m.
