El Paso Police Department Identifies Man Killed in East El Paso Crash, Second Driver Charged With Intoxication Manslaughter
The El Paso Police Department identified a 36-year-old man killed in a crash in East El Paso on Friday night.
The crash happened at the intersection of Gateway East and Lomaland just before 9:30 p.m. on Friday, taking the life of Ruban Chavez Jr.
Jhair Hassim Acosta, 26, was charged with intoxication manslaughter and possession of a controlled substance, penalty group 1 (cocaine). He currently sits in the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $156,000 bond.
The EPPD’s Special Traffic Investigation Unit states that Acosta was driving a 2018 Silver Kia Forte in the right lane on Gateway East when he struck a 2009 Kawasaki Ninja driven by Chavez, who was stopped at a red light. Chavez was thrown from the Ninja and died at the scene from his injuries.
This incident marks the 26th traffic fatality this year, compared to 30 at this time last year.
