9 hurt in multi-vehicle crash involving teen driver near NW El Paso

EL PASO, TX — Nine people were injured, one seriously, Thursday morning in a multi-vehicle wreck at an intersection in northwest El Paso, reports KVIA.

The collision occurred at North Mesa Street and Osborne Drive, near a shopping center in the Roberts area. It was first reported at about 10:45 a.m.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the events unfolded when a DPS trooper tried to pull over a car showing expired registration. At one point, the car slowed down and three occupants fled into a nearby neighborhood.

Officials said the trooper arrested the male driver, but the suspect vehicle had been driven away.

Another DPS trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle after spotting it at a nearby gas station, but the car fled again. It later collided with two other vehicles at the intersection.

Nine people among the three vehicles were injured, including one seriously injured patient.

Officials learned a 15-year-old U.S. citizen had been driving with multiple undocumented non-citizens in the trunk of the car when it crashed. Those passengers were later released into the custody of Border Patrol.

An investigation was underway.
